Predictions for in-store retail in 2022

Humans are notoriously bad at seeing into the future so we took the sensible option of asking a super-massive AI for some help. Here are our bionically enhanced predictions for what in-store retail can expect from 2022.

The Day Before The Night Before Christmas

It is expected that at least £10m worth of food, drink and last minute gifts will pass through Britain’s supermarket checkouts every hour over the course of the day. Around a third of this will be accounted for by customers scanning their own shopping.

Prevent Losses

Theft from shops is a growing problem - globally, losses are over $100Bn and the number is increasing year on year. In the UK, the police estimate that there are around 7 million shop theft incidents per year. Comparable statistics put the number in the US at around 200 million.

Reduce Stockouts

According to ECR Europe, on-shelf availability is extremely important to customers, but despite all of the investment in supply chain and stock management systems, new measuring and monitoring protocols, and even AI assisted inventory predictions, stockouts remain stubbornly persistent.
